My Son Sanctuary, Vietnam

Photograph by Steve Raymer, National Geographic

Tucked in the jungle along the central coast of Vietnam, the 4th- to 13th-century My Son Sanctuary was the religious and political seat of the ancient Champa Kingdom. Hindu deities adorning the temple towers reflect the civilization's roots in India. The sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a recognition also bestowed on the nearby town of Hoi An.
