In a rare event, a storm surge from Japan can cause this calm beach in Hawaii with 2-4 foot waves to explode with 40-60 foot waves. This phenomenon only occurs a few days per year, if that. And, the surge has been known to skip several years before the monster waves appear again. This beach aptly nicknamed “Jaws,” can only be surfed by an extremely proficient athlete. Those who wish to ride the gigantic waves must be taken out via Jet Ski due to their fast movement (25-35 mph). Surfers who fall may be held under the wave for 5-7 minutes – making this sport extremely dangerous.
