I was walking around on the top of a hill overlooking the Maasai Mara while a young boy was herding his family’s cows. He began to follow me around and quietly giggle after seeing photographs on the camera. When I knelt to take a photo, I felt breathing on the back of my neck; I was frightened at first, but I soon realized that it was the young boy with the machete. Because I don’t speak Swahili, I gestured to photograph him and he nodded. After making his portrait, I showed him. Right when he viewed the result he began laughing, that was the most joy that I have ever seen in someone’s face.
