Members of an "uncontacted" Brazilian tribe emerge from their huts to watch an airplane flying overhead. Some individuals reacted violently, shooting arrows at the aircraft.
The overflights were conducted by the Brazilian government to provide evidence of the existence of such tribes. The indigenous-advocacy group Survival International reported that the images quickly prompted an announcement by the Peruvian government that it will study the plight of its isolated native populations.
"This is a positive first step from the Peruvian government, but it must act fast," said Survival's director, Stephen Corry. "It must stop the logging, remove the loggers and any other invaders from the uncontacted Indians' land and ensure that no one else enters in the future."
