There is very little “authentic” shopping in Singapore. In the past, Singapore was a place where foreign ships brought in goods from the rest of the world for trade and barter. Today, air-conditioned malls along Orchard Road dedicated to designer labels dominate the shopping scene. However, there are a few local fashion designers and noted specialty products.

Resham Melwani
A local fashion designer who fuses Asian themes with modern dress design. Her work can be seen at www.reshamm.com.

Tea Bone Zen Mind
A small shop specializing in custom Chinese teapots, cups, and accessories. Will design to suit. 3 Seah Street #01-02; tel. +65 6334 4212

Frederick Lee
Creator of a line of evening and bridal gowns. Although noted for his custom creations, he also has many that are prêt à porter. 2 Jalan Klapa; tel. +65 6323 4372. www.frederickbridal.com

The Shophouse
An established antiques gallery outside the main shopping districts. Specializes in Indonesian furniture and other Asian creations; hosts art openings. 22 Lock Road; tel. +65 6344 0100. www.theshophouse.com

Tiger Balm
A menthol medicinal balm that was created using traditional Chinese medicinal concepts. It’s supposedly good for everything from insect bite itch relief to back pain. Manufactured in Singapore since the 1920s, now sold worldwide. www.tigerbalm.com
