Indiana Information and History

Like spokes in a wheel, interstates converge on Indiana's capital, where the first Indy 500 auto race was held in 1911. Total farm acreage in Indiana has decreased by 35 percent since 1900 due to factors such as bankruptcy or consolidation. Meanwhile, development has consumed thousands of acres of arable land. Manufacturing employs one out of four workers. Gary and Hammond anchor one of the world's great industrial regions.

ECONOMY

Industry: transportation equipment, steel, pharmaceutical and chemical products, machinery, petroleum, and coal industries, mining.
Agriculture: corn, soybeans, hogs, poultry and eggs, cattle, dairy products.
