Icehotel in Lapland, Sweden
Photograph by Ragnar Th Sigurdsson, Alamy
The northern lights flash above a guest outside the Icehotel, the largest frozen hotel in the world. First built more than 20 years ago, the Icehotel is constructed from 30,000 tons of “snis,” a mixture of snow and ice, in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, a small village outside Kiruna. Visitors don't have to brave the ice-block beds and stay the night—there's a restaurant and bar for shorter visits.

"Thirteen can be a brutal age, with some days feeling like pressure is coming from every direction: academics, peers, athletics," writes My Shot photographer Trisha Ratledge. "On a quiet summer afternoon, finally relaxed, Emma twirled without a care 250 meters above Tokyo. Her laugh echoed across the floor. A beautiful day."
The shot was taken on the observation deck of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, 52 floors above Tokyo.

Great Wall of China

The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China snakes through fall foliage near Beijing. A recent mapping project found that the entire Great Wall structure—which is actually a network of fortifications built over some 2,000 years—spans about 5,500 miles from the Korean border west into the Gobi desert. Of that total, 3,889 miles were actual wall; the rest were trenches and natural defensive barriers.

Pleneau Bay Glacier, Antarctica
Photograph by Eric Meola
Light playing off a glacier creates otherworldly hues in Pleneau Bay in Antarctica's Lemaire Channel. Photographer Eric Meola got this shot as he was in a Zodiac off the cruise ship Ocean Nova in December 2011. "As we floated up to an enormous iceberg, we went a bit too close and made gentle contact," he says, "just long enough for me to peer at the underside, which was being carved out and sculpted by the sea and waves."
