Grand Canyon, Arizona

Photograph by Whit Richardson, Aurora

A lone man hikes down through North Canyon in Grand Canyon, Arizona, following a river trip. The great chasm of the Grand Canyon extends 277 miles across northern Arizona—at the bottom, the Colorado River roars through 70 major rapids. In 2006, Grand Canyon National Park revised its 20-year-long, first-come, first-serve waiting list to raft the river without a commercial tour. Now you can win a permit through a park lottery.
