Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza, Spain

Photograph by Lucas Vallecillos, VWPics/Redux

Among Zaragoza's Moorish monuments, the jewel in the crown is the fully restored Palacio de la Aljafería, which stands two miles west of the city's old quarter. Originally built in the ninth century, it surrounds a central patio rich in carved stuccowork. Zaragoza, the capital of Aragón, flourished under four centuries of Moorish rule, beginning in 714.
