Ballerinas prepare to go onstage during a performance of The Nutcracker. The ballet, adapted from the story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann, was first performed in Russia in December 1892, set to a musical score by composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Taking in a performance of The Nutcracker, which takes place on Christmas Eve, has become a holiday tradition the world over.
