Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Photograph by Matthew Potter

Matthew Potter describes the story behind this photo, submitted to the 2014 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. "The 'lighting of the candle' of the Grand Teton in Grand Teton National Park happens every day, yet some days are simply more astounding than others," he says. "I was taking photos at dawn with amazing colors in the clouds, which would have made a photo of an iconic place such as this an astounding picture by itself, when the herd of bison wandered in between me and my camera. It captures the essence of Wyoming, my home for the last 30 years, in all its glory."
