Capela dos Ossos, Alentejo, Portugal

Visitors to the macabre Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) in Alentejo can meditate on mortality, as Franciscan monks once did. An inscription above the entrance sets the tone: "We, the bones that are here, await yours." Covering nearly every interior surface and pillar are the remnants of some 5,000 monks, retrieved in the 16th century from nearby cemeteries.
