Children descend the steps of the majestic Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, a national monument that, along with the surrounding park, was built to celebrate Chiang Kai-shek, the former president of the Republic of China. When it was first built, the monument was a pilgrimage destination for many Taiwanese.
