American Crocodile, Mexico

Photograph by Jorge Hauser

An American crocodile swims in the waters of Banco Chinchorro, an atoll reef located off Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. Vulnerable to habitat loss and overexploitation, American crocodiles are found in southern Florida, southern Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America, where they favor the fresh or brackish water of river estuaries, coastal lagoons, and mangrove swamps.
