Guanajuato, Mexico

Photograph by Greg Vaughn, VWPics/Redux

Filled with winding streets and ornate buildings, Guanajuato is one of Mexico's most beautifully preserved colonial cities. Unlike other cities that radiate in grids from the main plaza, Guanajuato's long, loopy streets intersect at odd angles. A turn in a cobblestone lane may lead to an ancient stairway, a dead end, or one of more than a dozen plazas surrounded by stores, open-air cafes, and rainbow-painted homes.
