Photograph by Frans Lanting, National Geographic

A pile of northern elephant seals and California sea lions soak up the sun in Farallon National Wildlife Refuge, located on the rocky Farallon Islands 30 miles west of San Francisco. The refuge is also home to the largest seabird nesting colony south of Alaska.
