Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
Photograph by Tim Dirven, Pano Pictures
Visitors walk between thousands of religious tributes on the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania. Catholic pilgrims to the site leave rosaries, crucifixes, and statues in addition to crosses, which are said to have first appeared in a peaceful show of resistance to foreign oppression.
