Svaneti, Georgia

Photograph by Aaron Huey, National Geographic

Horses still provide reliable transport through the largely roadless region of Svaneti, high in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia. Stone tower homes ranging in construction from the early 9th to the 17th centuries endure in the collection of villages that make up Ushguli, a World Heritage site, seen here.
