Faroe Islands, Denmark

A few weeks ago we asked our Facebook fans for their favorite summer destinations. For Hans Juul Nystrøm Hansen, nothing beats home. "I prefer spending the summer at home in the Faroe Islands. It is, after all, the best island destination in the world, according to, well, you." He's right—in 2007, National Geographic Traveler gave the Danish islands our top ranking.

Here, a lighthouse on Kalsoy looks out over the rest of the Faroes, an archipelago of steep slopes, grass roofs, and a preservation-minded population. The islands are off the coast of northern Europe, about halfway between Iceland and Norway.
