Malanka Bear, Ukraine

A young man dons the costume of a bear made of hay shortly before the traditional holiday of Malanka in the Ukrainian village of Krasnoyilsk. Malanka, celebrated on January 13, marks the eve of the New Year according to the Julian calendar. Hundreds of people wear handmade masks and costumes and march through the streets of the village singing and dancing.
