Rotterdam Mural, Netherlands

Photograph by VIEW Pictures/Alamy

First founded as a dam on the Rotte River in 1270, Rotterdam bloomed in the Golden Age, only for much of the city to be flattened during World War II. Rotterdam is now a city of modern architecture—visible in the vast Market Hall, an "inversion of a typical market square." Pictured here is part of a mural at Market Hall.
