Mishima Bridge, Japan

Photograph by Teruo Araya

A train chugs through the morning mist, crossing the Tadami River in Mishima, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This small, inland town is located three hours west of the site of the Fukushima nuclear disaster that devastated the country's coastline in 2011. Cleanup at the nuclear reactors is ongoing and volunteers are always welcome; the sight of foreigners returning to the area serves as a morale boost to the people of this afflicted region.
