Mljet National Park, Croatia

Photograph by Matthias Schickhofer, Anzenberger/Redux

Dense pine forests surround vivid lakes in Mljet National Park, which covers much of the island of Mljet on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast. For nearly 3,000 years few places in Europe have been as sought after as this coast. At one time or another, the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, French, Austrians, and British have occupied its shores.
