Pena National Palace, Portugal

Photograph by Ken Welsh, Aurora

A masterpiece of Romanticism, the 19th-century Pena National Palace tops a hill in Sintra, Portugal. The multicolored sections, repainted in the late 20th century, are faithful to the original design by Portuguese architect Possidónio da Silva.
