Punakha Valley, Bhutan

Photograph by Pete Ryan, National Geographic

Rice terraces stairstep down the Punakha Valley in Bhutan, a tiny Buddhist kingdom in the Himalaya. Roughly three-quarters of the country's 635,000 people survive by raising crops and livestock, but less than a tenth of the rugged land is arable.

See why Bhutan is in the running for the world's best green place in this month's National Geographic Traveler cover story, "The Traveler 50: People, Places, and Ideas Changing the Way We Travel" >>
