The Agra Fort was built in Agra, once the capital of the Mughal Empire, between 1565 and 1573 by the ruler Akbar. When Akbar's grandson Shah Jahan—he who built the Taj Mahal, also in Agra—moved the capital to Delhi in 1648, the Agra Fort was left to plunderers.
