Colorful tiles from more than 60 countries cover an outdoor stairway connecting the neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. Escadaria Selarón is the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, who began the mosaic in 1990. It now contains more than 2,000 tiles and will be completed only "on the day of my death," the artist says.
