Adirondack State Park, New York
Photograph by Michael Melford, National Geographic
Winter whitens Mount Van Hoevenberg, its summit clad in balsam fir and spruce, in the High Peaks area of Adirondack State Park. The patchwork park covers nearly six million acres in New York, making it the largest park of any kind in the lower 48 states. Nearly half the land is privately owned.
