Shaolin Monk, China
Photograph by Justin Guariglia, Redux
Shi De Jian, a Shaolin monk from the San Huang Zhai monastery in the Song Mountains of China, demonstrates traditional martial arts. Popular myth says that it was in these mountains that a fifth-century Indian mystic first taught monks a series of exercises that mimicked animal movements. The monks adapted the forms for self-defense and later modified them for warfare.
