Yosemite Valley, California

Photograph by Laura Hoffner

A late spring snowfall frosts the tips of pine trees in Yosemite Valley. For more than 9,000 years, Indian communities inhabited the valley; now, Yosemite National Park, a World Heritage site, is one of the most famous wilderness areas in the world, receiving four million annual visitors. At the heart of the park, the scenic valley offers awe-inspiring views of the peaks of El Capitan, Half Dome, and the world's tallest monolith, Glacier Point.
