Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary, Jerusalem

Photograph by Mendy Hechtman, Flash90/Redux

The bitterly contested hilltop known as Temple Mount to Jews and the Noble Sanctuary to Muslims is topped by Al Aqsa Mosque and the golden Dome of the Rock, marking Muhammad's ascent to heaven. The sanctuary was built on the ruins of the ancient Jewish Temple razed by Rome in A.D. 70. The Temple complex's exposed Western Wall is the holiest site in Judaism.
