The City, London

Photograph by Mark Henley, Panos Pictures

Covering a little over a square mile, the oldest part of London—known somewhat confusingly as the City—is now a world financial center. (The Bank of England headquarters, nicknamed "the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street," is seen here.) On weekdays the area bustles as more than 300,000 workers come and go, but nights and weekends are quiet—only 10,000 people live here.
