Located a block away from the Plaza, the Romanesque-style Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was built between 1869 and 1886 by Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy, the first Archbishop of Santa Fe.

Turquoise-painted window frames in adobe walls are typical in Santa Fe, where city ordinances have preserved the Spanish Pueblo Revival look. A window of the Michael Smith Gallery on Canyon Road, one of the city's oldest streets, looks in on Navajo and Pueblo textiles. The gallery has antique native Indian baskets and pottery, as well as antique and contemporary paintings and photographs.
