Lebanon: Coastal Areas
99 Coastal Destinations Rated: Bottom Rated
Score: 43
The Lebanese coastline offers miles of "pretty beaches" and "impressive archaeological evidence" of its rich history, but suffers from some environmental problems.
Here is a representative sampling of additional anonymous comments from the panelists. They are not necessarily the views of the National Geographic Society:
"In spite of the regular outbursts of destructive political conflict across much of the hinterland, the coasts have suffered little direct impact and retain a surprisingly high level of integrity."
"Decades of unsustainable practices will take decades to undo, but there are oases of calm and beauty."
"Environmental protection, biodiversity, nature preservation, and beauty of the place are being destroyed at a rapid pace due to the absence of the state."
"Due to the civil war, tourism infrastructure has suffered. Beaches are pretty. Local population is involved directly with the tourism. Probably their weak point is that Lebanon needs a planning development based on sustainability principles."
