Students, Santa Avelina
Photograph by Evan Angus, My Shot
In August of 2008 I took a service trip to Guatemala. We traveled deep into the mountains to the remote village of Santa Avelina. While there we stayed in the grade school. During the day we had to leave so the children could go to school. I took this picture of the children hanging out of the window while I was leaving.

Church, El Progreso
Photograph by Saskia Bunge, My Shot
Churches, cathedrals, and chapels are everywhere in Guatemala. This particular church in El Progreso can be seen from the heavily transited road to the Atlantic. I've often wanted to stop and photograph it but held back until this perfectly illuminated afternoon.

Antigua Guatemala
Photograph by Fletcher West, My Shot
The cobbled streets were gleaming from the last few rays escaping the clouds. Some local women, a boy on his bike, and tourists were all on their way somewhere—but not in a rush to get there. Taken near Parque Central, in Antigua Guatemala.

Guatemalan Woman

This shot was taken while on a mission trip in Guatemala. I found that the elders held great respect from the community and were looked upon as filled with wisdom. This woman sat, watching the town move while admiring what was around her.

Guatemalan Children
Photograph by Jon Nigg, My Shot
I just recently returned from a trip to Guatemala where I was provided the opportunity to build a house for a family. These two kids were a part of that family. It's amazing what a roof can do for someone. I can't wait to return and see them.

Fruit Market
Photograph by David Vaughan Watkins, My Shot
Being slightly hidden from the main textile and souvenir market, the indoor fruit market in Chichicastenango is missed by most tourists. The movement of all the bodies, the rush of all the bartering, and the colors of the fruit filled the room with a memorable level of energy. I felt the balcony around this hall was a special place. It was somewhere where I could watch how the world worked in a less well developed part of the planet.

Dawn at a Maya landing on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. The Highland Maya men are unloading avocados from local farms. The small boats in the foreground are used for fishing and are of a very old design. We mistakenly arrived at this landing. The quiet and mist gave it an otherworldly feeling.
