On our practice trek on Cayambe in Ecuador, we took a break at 4,600 meters. I looked up and through the clouds I saw our penultimate goal before our attempt to summit Cotopaxi.

Village Square, Cayambe
Photograph by Andre Salvador, My Shot
On our tour of Ecuador, we accidentally got caught in a monstrous traffic jam. When our tour guide found out it was part of the weeklong celebration of the harvest festival, he let us out to enjoy ourselves. This happened at one of the villages in the Cayambe highlands. The photo shows the village square with Cayambe volcano in the background.

Mountain Bikers, Otavalo
Photograph by Doug Pyper, My Shot
While doing some mountain biking near Otavalo, Ecuador, I met two young locals, Paul and Patricio. I had planned to ride to El Lechero, an ancient tree said to have magical effects on those who touch it. They accompanied me, and we set up this shot. The contrast of the modern-day mountain bikers and the old tree gives an almost mystical feel to the image, and the equatorial midday light coming from directly above creates a surreal visual effect on the branches of the tree.

I shot this at a soccer game in Quito, right after the Ecuadorian national soccer team scored a goal against the Paraguayan team. It took only one second for the entire stadium to stand up and start cheering vigorously.

This is a Sally Lightfoot crab in the very clear waters of the Galápagos Islands. Besides being beautiful, they have the most amazing ability to skitter quickly across the water from rock to rock.

Beach, Canoa
Photograph by Haim Ilan, My Shot
The Ecuadorian coast has a very hot and humid climate, with temperatures averaging 25ºC to 31ºC. The rainy season is during the months of December to May when it is warmer and very humid. The dry season is a little less humid but it isn't dry at all. Ecuador never goes long without heavy rainfall. This photo is from Canoa on the coast.

Birthday Party, Mindo
Photograph by Doug Pyper, My Shot
I came upon this child's birthday celebration on the main street of the small village of Mindo, Ecuador, while traveling last winter. I entered the doorway and asked if I could take some photographs. I was warmly welcomed. This is one of many amazing photos from that shoot. I particularly like the two little girls hugging in anticipation as the piñata is struck.
