Rameses II Statue, Saqqara
Photograph by Andre Salvador, My Shot
Getting up close to a giant cultural artifact is quite an experience. You can see the actual scale and have an idea of the size of the structure it fits in. You can also see and touch the details and the textures and see the true colors. This is the statue of Rameses II, in Saqqara, in the necropolis of Memphis, Egypt.

Sunset, Siwa Oasis
Photograph by Michael Olson, My Shot
The sun had just dipped below the horizon, and my mule cart driver named Abdullah reached up to a date palm to break fast for the Muslim month of Ramadan. I asked him for a ride just as he was headed home for breaking fast with his family, so he instead broke fast with a date palm. I snapped this picture at that moment. Taken in the Siwa Oasis, Egypt, late 2009.

Great Sphinx and Pyramid of Khafre
Photograph by Gursimran Sibia, My Shot
The Pyramid of Khafre is the second largest of the ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza and the tomb of the fourth-dynasty Pharaoh Khafre. The Great Sphinx is a statue of a reclining lion with a human head that stands on the Giza Plateau in Giza. It was a bright sunny day, but just before I took this shot, my frame was engulfed by these moody clouds appearing from nowhere, making this an extraordinary shot! Camera used: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT; 1/400; f/13.0; 21mm Lens: 18-55mm.

I took this in Egypt beside the Nile. As we camped on our felucca boat, a nomad and his donkey came into view. I set up for a shot with the moon next to them, but as i took this five-second exposure the moon lit up the donkey and nomad, leaving a shadow of a nomadic past.

Egyptian Man
Photograph by Joseph Pickard, My Shot
As I was traveling the streets of Cairo, I wandered down an alley, and while I was looking up at a mosque, a man grabbed my arm. In his hand was a potato. This he gave me, despite my protesting, and when I had gobbled it up, he gave me another, for which I paid two Egyptian pounds. He was overwhelmed and very thankful. I took his picture and went on my way.

Photograph by Justin Kelly, My Shot
An Eygptian enjoys his pipe at night in the mountains surrounding Sharm el-Sheikh. Shot handheld using available light from the fire just out of frame, which meant a shutter speed of 1/15, at f3.5, in order to enable enough light to illuminate the subject.

Gulf of Aqaba, Sinai
Photograph by Graeme Fordham, My Shot
This image was taken in front of my house at the time on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba in Dahab, South Sinai. I was back home for a few days' rest, roughly at the midway point of a solo (well, except for my trusty donkey) coastal walk from Taba on the border with Israel to Sharm el-Sheikh in the south, when I came outside to find the Bedouin children fishing and playing in the water. The light was just right to reveal the beautiful reef colours and the glowing mountains.
