Canal du Midi
Photograph by Jim Ferguson, My Shot
This photo is of the Canal du Midi in the south of France and was taken just outside of Beziers in Languedoc. The canal was constructed in the 17th century as a shortcut from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic in order to avoid the long sea voyage around hostile Spain in pirate-infested waters. It was built by a rich farmer from the Languedoc region and opened in May of 1681. The canal has 103 locks that raise or lower traffic as necessary.

Mont Saint-Michel
Photograph by Rick Wianecki, My Shot
Imagine it! Late November 2009. We're driving from the Loire Valley. We've made a wrong turn somewhere. We don't have reservations for a hotel. It starts to rain. Are we going to make it? And there, in the distance, is Le Mont Saint-Michel! We drive closer and the lights come on. I jump out, using my coat to shield the lens and snap this shot. P.S. We found a hotel nearby—but this was probably the best view and the most rewarding!

Reflection, Paris
Photograph by Emily Overmyer, My Shot
While in Paris, I came across this oddly designed building. Artwork had been mounted on the building face to make the structure appear as if it was a surrealist piece of art. The sharp contrast of this odd building against the classic architecture surrounding it encouraged me to snap the picture.

Notre Dame at Dusk
Photograph by Rick Wianecki, My Shot
I took this photograph in the early dusk, when the lights of Notre Dame just flickered "on" and the daylight seemed to be melting away through various shades of blue. It was a memorable end to a great day of tramping through the streets of Paris.

Farmers
Photograph by Kiritin Beyer, My Shot
The high-top farms of France are among the last outposts of a generational tension that has already played itself out in most other Western communities: a tension between the hardscrabble farming life and the siren song of industrialized urban centers. Are the fathers—the farmers—merely dinosaurs, anachronistic vestiges clinging naively to the ways of times long gone? Or are they our potential boon-bringers, reminders of all that the new generations have forgotten but ought to revive?
