The Galway Races, a weeklong festival of horse racing, is the biggest race meeting in Ireland. Even now, during the recession, they draw huge crowds, as much for the social life as the racing, as much for dressing up as for picking a good bet.

Seal, Donegal Bay

Taken at the mouth of the River Eske in Donegal Bay on the northwest coast of Ireland. This was one of about seven seals that came into the bay at high tide looking for dinner. This was the only one that came close to the shore while the others were busy feeding.

I spent four months at school in Galway, Ireland, and my archaeology class took a castle field trip. I captured this picture as the class was walking past the ruined castle. I love the fact that I got our shadows—it leaves some mystery as to who the figures walking past are.
