Kibera, Nairobi
Photograph by Allen Clinton, My Shot
A boy rolls his wheel out of Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera is known as the largest slum in Africa, with an estimated one million people compressed in a fusion of rusted corrugated metal and tattered cardboard, all within an area measuring three-fourths the size of Manhattan's Central Park.

Elephants, Amboseli National Park
Photograph by Ramesh Ratwatte, My Shot
"Where have you been, my son?" said Joseph, our driver and guide, while on safari at Amboseli National Park, Kenya. He was in fact describing the moment of tenderness that took place in front of us. Earlier, this baby elephant waded out of the marshes with its mother and was later greeted by another female in the herd. For a moment it looked as if the baby elephant was smiling.

Fruit Vendors, Voi
Photograph by Tessa Doogue, My Shot
On a bus ride between Nairobi and Mombasa, these women approached my window offering a local delicacy—mango and chili powder. I asked to take this photo before buying the snack. The photo was taken in Voi, a town in the Taita-Taveta district of Kenya. It is a market town and an entrance point to some of Kenya's most stunning national parks, which border Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mount Kenya
Photograph by Chris Cale, My Shot
This photo was taking at sunrise at the summit of Mount Kenya in December of 2006. It was a technically difficult shot, as I was forced to keep my balance on the side of the mountain while snapping the picture with one hand. This was taken with a Nikon D200 with an AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm DX VR.

Young Audience, Mosocho
Photograph by Lassal Lassal, My Shot
Young Kenyan girls watch the open rehearsals for the "celebrations" at Mosocho, Kenya, one day before the official event. During "celebrations" new (female), marriageable members are introduced into the Kisii community. While this traditionally means that these girls have to be circumcised, organizations in Mosocho are now trying to overcome this ritual through education and by providing certificates that display the girls' names and declare them full members of the community.

Leopard, Masai Mara National Reserve
Photograph by Brian Helmuth, My Shot
We accidentally woke up this leopard while he was napping in a tree. He had obviously just eaten a large meal (note his belly), and he was quick to show his displeasure as he left his napping spot for a quieter venue. Interactions between wildlife in the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya (where this shot was taken) and humans had been unusually low as of last July because of recent violence in the country, and so most animals were more curious than skittish.

Barber Shop
Photograph by Necia Clare Erickson, My Shot
This image is one of my favorites from traveling in Kenya last summer. The colors and patterns of this barber shop drew me into photographing it in a way that depicted not only the vibrance of the shop, but also the culture of the people who lived there.

Thomson's Gazelle
Photograph by Paolo Torchio, My Shot
The dream of all wildlife photographers is to take a shot of something that you can't find in any book. This is the case. A unique anomaly gives this Thomson's gazelle a shape never seen and documented before. A thrilling, unforgettable moment. The photograph was taken in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

Thorn Tree
Photograph by Shawna Nelles, My Shot
Kenya has always been a place close to my heart. I was revisiting the country after 20 years, showing my son a place I lived and loved when I was a kid. This photo is one of my favorites, maybe because the tree seems to stand as a reminder of my attachment to a time and place that has shaped my own life significantly.

Tana River Basin
Photograph by Siliana Laurenti, My Shot
Global climate change has terrible effects in Kenya, including dramatic droughts all over the country. The tracks of a little bird are seen in a dried-out river basin, where you could hardly imagine a form of life. Yes, we can live here. Kenya, Tana River, July 2009.

Congolese Woman, Nairobi
Photograph by John Gyovai, My Shot
A Congolese woman prepares dinner for her family in Nairobi, Kenya. As an urban refugee, life is filled with the never-ending struggle to provide for her family. When there is no food, family members go to restaurants and ask for discarded chicken feet. She works to remove the ropes before boiling them in water. Filmmaker John Gyovai captured the image after interviewing her for a documentary film project about urban refugees with the International Rescue Committee and MediaServe Intl.

Golden Orb Weavers
Photograph by Tim Allen, My Shot
Also known as golden orb weavers or golden silk orb weavers, these spiders produce webs that can measure more than three feet in diameter, with support strands extending many more feet away. The name of this family of spiders refers to the colour of the silk, which is said to be attractive to insects, and is only produced by the much larger female. To avoid damage from birds, it is claimed that insect husks are left on the web to act as visual cues (like safety strips/signs on glass doors/windows!) but several reports of these spiders eating small birds in some parts of the world contradict this notion.
