Dye Baths, Fez
Photograph by Kimberly Jansen, My Shot
First the hides are soaked in diluted pigeon excrement to soften them up, then they're processed in several vegetable dye baths—saffron for yellow, henna for red. This process has been used for hundreds of years. An amazing place to visit in Fez.

Guide, Sahara
Photograph by Veronique Fleury, My Shot
I took this picture while I was on a trek in the Sahara (Merzouga, Morocco). I was contemplating the surrounding sand dunes on my dromedary, when I turned around just in time to see our guide tying his turban. Perfect timing and the magnificent sunset made one of my favorite pictures of the whole trip.

Girl With Bird, Merzouga
Photograph by Rui Pires, My Shot
This photo was taken in the Sahara in southern Morocco in May 2010. I found this girl with a bird on a street in a little village near Merzouga. The bird is her pet and protects the girl all the time. The bird tried to attrack me sometimes when I was taking some photos of the girl.

Sunrise, Sahara
Photograph by Hilary Nykwest, My Shot
This is a sunrise over the northwestern dunes of the Sahara in the southeast of Morocco. A group of students and I spent two nights in the desert with guides from a nearby Berber village. This young Berber man led me to this dune around 5:30 in the morning, and we then waited for the sunrise. He told me that views such as this are what make him love living in the desert; problems of the "outside world" do not exist.

Marrakech
Photograph by Katie Carlson, My Shot
This was my last night in Morocco. I happened to be walking to dinner and looked down an alleyway to see this scene. The lighting was great, and there was smoke coming from men cooking outside. I was only able to take one shot of this. Luckily with a good end result. I love candid pictures of people when they have no idea that you are even taking their picture. I have always felt that it has given me the best results!

Tannery, Fez
Photograph by Andy Wallis, My Shot
During a visit to the tannery in Fez, Morocco, I saw these saffron-dyed hides drying on a rooftop. I couldn't let the moment pass. In a place full of colors, this saffron yellow really stood out, even against the hay. Continuing traditional techniques, all of the saffron is collected by hand and concentrated in the dye baths, just as it was centuries ago.

Dye Store, Chefchaoun
Photograph by Elizabeth McClure, My Shot
I took this photo of a dye store while wandering through the mountain town of Chefchaoun in northern Morocco. Many of the walls and alleyways in the town are painted blue, giving it a colorful appearance. Vendors and stalls line the narrow streets, selling everything from dye and spices to jewelry, clothing, or mint tea.

Camels, Sahara
Photograph by Mark Gottlieb, My Shot
On a family trip to Morocco last month, we spent a few days on the western edge of the Sahara, traveling by camel. We stopped for the day, and the camels were all allowed to finally sit down. As the sun set behind a few of the camels, I grabbed my camera and got this fabulous shot.

Camel Guide, Erg Chebbi
Photograph by Sasa Huzjak, My Shot
Lonely camel guide in Erg Chebbi, Morocco, Africa. We found out that the desert, with its quietness and lack of any man-made architecture, offers great relief after the frenzied pace of the Moroccan towns that we visited for the first time, and for me, this photo symbolizes just that.

Beach, Tangier
Photograph by Robert Hale, My Shot
On my first trip to Tangier, while staying at a hotel on the Strait of Gibraltar, the photography gods rewarded me with this serene and contemplative image of a lone man walking along the beach beneath my balcony. The muted light, the sculpted lines of waves languidly rolling in toward him, as well as the apparent lack of concern on his part, makes this image one of tension and grace, emphasizing man's relationship to nature.

In the late evening we came to the largest market (suq) in Marrakech, Morocco. The square called Djemaa el Fna was full of everything: snake charmers, dancers, musicians, water and food sellers. This little lady sleeping on her mom's back was the calmest and most beautiful thing in that atmosphere.

Hassan II Mosque
Photograph by Steven Greaves, My Shot
The Hassan II Mosque, located in Casablanca, is the largest mosque in Morocco and the third largest mosque in the world after the Masjid al-Haram of Mecca and the Al-Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina. It stands on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic Ocean and can accommodate 25,000 worshippers; 80,000 additional worshippers can be accommodated in the mosque's adjoining grounds. Seen here is the mosque's minaret, which is the world's tallest at 210 meters.
