Seemingly overcome by the sheer joy of living, a humpback whale breaches off the Wild Coast of South Africa. Once heavily endangered and only rarely seen, but with their numbers increasing, the humpback whales' annual migration along this coastline coincides with that of the spectacular sardine run.

Southern White-Faced Owl

Returning to the lodge after a long day on safari, a spotlight caught a white-faced southern owl watching us from the trees. I was lucky enough to capture the unique species of owl. I was later informed that these owls are somewhat rare in that part of South Africa.

Aquila Game Reserve, Western Cape, South Africa. On a dawn game drive, our path was blocked by this trio of rhinos. Their bodies were aligned for a few moments, giving the appearance of one huge rhino with three heads. After capturing a few shots we promptly reversed our four-by-four!

We were on safari just outside of Kruger National Park in South Africa when we spotted a mother and her two young leopards. The mother was teaching the youngsters how to climb. Fortunately I clicked the shutter at just the right moment and caught these two breathtakingly beautiful young leopards staring right at me.

Steam Train

I took this of my son and his cousin, enjoying a short trip on an old steam train, between George and Knysna, South Africa. The railway tracks hug the coastline, and for portions of the trip you can feel the ocean spray in your face. Wildfire, Table Mountain

A large natural fire that broke out on Devil's Peak, Table Mountain, in Cape Town during the during the hot month of March. A homeless man lost his life, his wife was hospitalized with third-degree wounds, and the whole area surrounding Devil's Peak evacuated. I saw the mountain burning when I came from the pub on my birthday.

This lion cub is being raised to accompany human tourists on "lion walks" at a lodge in South Africa. The practice of removing cubs from their mothers and habituating them to humans appears to be increasing in southern Africa as the demand for lion walks increases.
