Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai

The Elephant Nature Park is a rescue center for domesticated elephants near Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Every day the elephants march down to the river to have a bath and be washed by tourists and volunteers. What I feel is almost palpable in this photo is the pleasure these rescued elephants derive from these interactions, and it highlights the rewarding work Sangduen "Lek" Chailert and her team are doing with this elephant sanctuary.

Scuba Diver and Barracuda

We were diving a wreck called Pak-1 off the eastern seaboard of Thailand. Just off the wreck a big school of barracuda swam past. I got my friend's attention, and as he turned toward the barracuda, he struck a pose of sheer wonder. Diving has its moments like anything in life, and I feel lucky to have caught this one on camera.

I headed out to Thailand from Los Angeles for an adventure, partly to study muay Thai and partly to find myself in a crazy place. This was one of many photos off the coast of Koh Tao in Thailand, near Koh Phangan, where I trained. A fish just happened to steal the shot.

This venomous Chinese tree viper fell out of a tree and landed on the mirror of my motorbike, while I was driving, at Koh Chang, Thailand. She let me take some photos and then I returned her to her tree.

Traveling through Thailand, I noticed that these baskets of fish appeared to be a hit with locals, as they continuosly appear in the Thai markets. I had to capture these because they seemed iconic to Thai food and lifestyle, to me, and I thought it made an interesting photo.

I went to Chiang Mai, Thailand, this past summer in 2009. I went for a walk in a remote village and found this beautiful woman. She showed me her house and I showed her the contents of my purse. We got along quite well, but we couldn't understand each other. She seemed so wise and kind, I will never forget her. As I was saying good-bye to her and she pointed to my camera, I guessed she wanted a picture, so I took one of her and one of the both of us.

I had planned a recent trip to Thailand in November to coincide with the Loy Krathong celebration because I had seen pictures of the floating lanterns being launched into the sky. However, nothing I had seen prepared me for the incredible magic of experiencing thousands of these lanterns floating into the night sky at once while monks chanted at the Lanna Meditation Center in Chiang Mai. It was once of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.

While traveling through Thailand, we'd often run into these little places that have tanks with lots of tiny fish that are used to provide therapeutic micro-massages to the feet. Feet are one of the most sensitive areas of the body, with a large number of nerves there. So one can only guess why some people call them fish doctors.
