Everglades National Park, Florida

Photograph by Jonathan Irish

On Indian Key in Ten Thousand Islands, within Everglades National Park in Florida, American white pelicans wade together into the coastal waters where they spend the winter. This flock may be preparing to feed: Rather than dive into the water to catch fish like their brown cousins, American white pelicans fish cooperatively while afloat. They herd prey into coves or circle them, working the fish into a tighter and tighter huddle—and then dipping their bills into the water to scoop up dinner.
