Mount Meru, Tanzania

Photograph by Menno Boermans

Trekkers walking along a Mount Meru ridge in Tanzania are treated to a dramatic view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Meru, located in Arusha National Park, is Tanzania's second highest peak at 14,980 feet (4,566 meters). Though many travelers visit Meru as a side trip to Kilimanjaro, a climb up Mount Meru is satisfying in its own right, rewarding visitors with a rigorous climb and sightings of an array of plants and wildlife.
