Editorial Research Intern

Position Summary


The research intern will learn how we produce the magazine, in both print and tablet forms, and get to see how the various parties involved in the process (editors, writers, photo editors, designers, our digital team) interact. The intern will learn how we conduct research to ensure the factual accuracy of Traveler. The intern will also attend in-depth editorial research classes offered by our library, through which they will earn a National Geographic Total Research Certificate. The intern will attend departmental and full staff meetings, photo review and layout sessions, as well as special events and hands-on opportunities to enhance their learning experience.


Learning Opportunities


- Observe and participate in supervised editorial activities such as fact-checking magazine, online, & app copy.
- Receive supervised hands-on training in how to research photos and picture captions.
- Learn how we copyedit and proofread text to adhere to NG style and standards.
- Attend research classes at the library, staff meetings, brown-bag lunches, management one-on-one sessions, and other training opportunities to learn how we produce our magazine.


Related Field of Study Required


Journalism, English, Humanities or related fields


Additional Knowledge and Skill Requirements


An enthusiastic undergraduate or graduate student. Attention to detail, curiosity, perseverance, and the ability to work independently are preferred. Computer savvy a plus.


Additional Information


The internship is offered during the spring (January through May), summer (late May through August) and fall (September through December) semesters, to coincide with university schedules. School credit must be obtained for this internship, and there is no pay. Please ask your academic adviser to verify that this internship would qualify for credit hours.
