Though a very religious Buddhist country, Myanmar is superstitious as well. And there is no better place to witness the superstitious end of the spectrum than at a Spirit (or Nat) Festival. Here, nats (men dressed as women) dance themselves into a whirling frenzy to eardrum popping music to put themselves into a trance and channel the Spirit for paying patrons, those who believe these nat mediums can communicate with the Spirit in order to see into the future like fortune tellers. I and my group of 3, who were treated to front row seats, were the only outside- the-village attendees.
Location: Shwegyikyi Pagoda complex, Bago, Myanmar
