Reaching out to the World

I joined the Johns Hopkins University chapter of Engineers Without Borders in its South Africa project to conduct research and field work in rural KwaZulu-Natal. The area has suffered great loss from AIDS and violence. While working with rural garden communities to install irrigation water pumps, our group ran into some school children. We didn't speak Zulu but still wanted to play, so, we resorted to gestures. The picture captured an incredible moment, a message that has stayed with me: when reaching out to lend a hand, we are mutual beneficiaries of the process.
