Along with the population around the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, Mauritian natives live in villages that are spread all over the countryside or the coasts of the island. Locals are engaged in part-time farming, work for sugar plantation, textile manufacturers or the tourism sector. Although severe or absolute poverty in the Republic of Mauritius is not as prominent as in other countries of Africa it is becoming an emerging issue, especially in rural areas. 10 per cent of the Mauritians are estimated to be living in poverty, but the real number may be substantially higher.
