Meghalaya; Abode of clouds

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Anirudha Chakraborty

The State of Meghalaya in Northeastern India literally means the abode of clouds in Sanskrit. On my way to Cherrapunji, the wetest place on earth, I saw on a distant hill a Khasi tribal graveyard. The Khasi were converted to Christanity by Baptist ministers. What struck me was the utter desolateness of the site as if it was apart from earth and closer to heaven. It was slightly drizzling as it always does in Cherrapungi.

Location: Meghalaya, India
